AVROS FACE CHIEFS IN ROUND 1 OF MFMHL PLAYOFFS
GAME #4: March 2 at 7:30 at Shoal Lake
Just fourteen hours after a tough loss on home ice your Avros boarded the bus to head back to Shoal Lake for game 4. Having the will has never been the problem but finding the way has and tonight the Winnipeg Avros were determined to break their scoring drought. Another great start for the squad lead to bigger and better things. There wasn't a change in pace or intensity but there was definitely an aura that filled the dressing room; a mood that came over the 15 person unit on Saturday that this was a team prepared to make things happen. Forgetting yesterday and focusing on today was huge and that's exactly what the team did as they played shift by shift like it was their last. Hard work prevailed for the Avros on Saturday as they out-shot the Chiefs 19-3 in the first, 20-5 in the second and 19-11 in the third. The Avros found a way not just once but three times in the second period after Alanna Sharman, Nicole Carswell and Shyan Elias all put pucks passed Yellowhead goaltender, Sky Brown. The Avros have struggled through exhaustion only playing with 7 forwards for their last three games but it would only get worse after a dirty hit in front of the Avros bench would put out another Avros forward and shrink the front line to six. The team headed into the third looking to stamp round one but knew the players from Yellowhead would never quit. That being said, tonight the AVROS FOUND A WAY. "Your 'Vros got their groove back." Congrats to the team on a huge character win and to all players for playing with so much heart. Next round starts friday, March 8th as your Winnipeg Avros travel to Hartney to take on the #2 ranked Westman Wildcats.
GAME #3: March 1 at 7:15 at Keith Bodley
The Winnipeg Avros took to the ice tonight hoping to end round 1 with three consecutive victories. All those hopes looked bright from the drop of the puck as the Avros came out refreshed as they pushed hard at the Chiefs all night. The Avros would control 85% of the game but struggle to find the back of the net for the third straight game. This is starting to become the story line for the Avros as the club continues to outwork and out play teams but still struggle to find their finish. The Chiefs would strike first in the second period after a defensive breakdown lead to a 2 on 1 opportunity with Jalin Adams finding the first marker. It would take less than three minutes for the Chiefs to score again on a scramble in front of Avros goaltender, Justine McIntosh. The Avros out-shot the Chiefs 17-6 in the second period but would fall behind 2-0. A disappointed and frustrated group headed to the dressing room to talk it out. The Avros coaching staff was left speechless as they questioned "what do you say to a team that is doing everything right?" The answer was to keep pushing and try to find a way. Tonight would not be the night for the Avros as finding a way seemed out of reach. Only giving up 4 shots in the third period would not be enough as the Chiefs downed the Avros 3-0 and force the Avros to head back on the road tomorrow for game 4.
GAME #2: February 24th at 5:00 at Shoal Lake
The Winnipeg Avros traveled to Shoal Lake today for game 2 of their Yellowhead Playoff Series. Today brought great things for the team as they focused on being better than the night before. The Avros brought a good start and continued to skate with a high pace throughout the FULL 60 minutes. Your Avros controlled most of the play out shooting the Chiefs 40-17. Although your Avros notched 40 shots and had many great scoring opportunities, Sky Brown back stopped 39 of them, only giving up one to the Avros on the power play. Becky Conner was the lone scorer after she re-directed a point shot by Alicia Van Alstyne. The Avros squad brought drive to their game today and plan to finish their five game series on friday when the Chiefs come to Winnipeg for game 3 (7:15 at Keith Bodley).
GAME #1: February 23rd at 11:50 at Keith Bodley
The Avros faced off today against the Yellowhead Chiefs in what would end in an exciting nail biting finish. The Avros have been hit with injury and the flu bug only rolling six forwards at times. The team knew things weren't going to come easy but were definitely up for the challenge. Fatigue set in early leading to a couple of Avros defensive break downs but goaltender Shelby Audet was there to keep the Chiefs out. TSN turning point came when Chiefs forward beat two Avro players in the defensive zone creating a 3-0 opportunity inside the house; an opportunity was all it would be as Audet shut the door once again. The Avros were not able to keep the Chiefs out forever as forward Tirra Lemoine would find the back of the net on the only Yellowhead power play of the game. An exhausted and frustrated Avros team headed to the dressing room to re-vamp their game plan going into the third. The team was focused and knew nothing could out match hard work. Playing for their motto "all out, all game, all season", the Avros came out hard, elevating the pace of their game. Rookie forward, Jordyn Reimer re-directed a point shot from sister Nicole on an Avros power play just over two minutes into the third. All tied up at 1, the Avros continued to control the game and with 6 minutes to go it would be an outstanding individual effort by Alanna Sharman to bury the Avros second and last goal of the game. Your Winnipeg Avros squeeked out the 2-1 win today and know they have to be better tomorrow when they face the Yellowhead Chiefs on their turf in Shoal Lake.
NAHA EDGES AVROS
It was a hard fought, back and forth hockey game today between the NAHA Hawks and your Winnipeg Avros. Final shot count was 20-18 in favour of your Avros with several scoring opportunities at both ends. This would be the strongest skating and quick paced game the Avros will have faced thus far. The lone goal of the game came while the Avros were short handed early in the third period on a well executed Hawks powerplay . Your Avros fought back hard but were unable to capatilize ending in a 1-0 loss after 51 minutes of play. Both teams advance to the quarter finals with your Avros taking on the Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats at 3:20 this afternoon.
AVROS OUT SHOOT, OUT CHANCE AND OUT PLAY BUT FALL SHORT
The Avros were back on the ice for game two of the JWHL Challenge cup tonight when they took on The Detroit Little Caesars. Your Vros came out strong yet again out shooting Little Caesars 10-3 in both the first and second periods and added another 10 shots in the third for a game total of 30-14. Although the Avros out worked, out hussled and out shot the Little Caesars, it was missed scoring opportunities that haunted the team throughout the 51 minutes of play. The Avros continued to push and buzz around the little Caesars crease but could not find the back of the net tonight. After a disallowed goal early in the first, the Avros would push back with a relentless puck pursuit. Megan Ross notched the first goal of the game to put the Avros up 1-0 after the first but that would be the Avros lone goal on the night. The game would finish with the Avros down 3-1. Next game goes tomorrow at 7:40 a.m. when the team faces NAHA (North American Hockey Academy) from Vermont.
AVROS WIN TOURNAMENT OPENER IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
Your Winnipeg Avros are currently in Washington, D.C. competing in the JWHL U17 Challenge Cup. The Avros opened tournament play today beating the Quakers from Pennsylvania 4-0. The Avros took charge of the game from the drop of the puck when Erin Kucheravy won the draw setting up a perfect Neutral zone regroup where the Avros would attack the blue line and move the puck to the top. Defenceman Hailey Cromie opened scoring for the Avros with a shot from the point just 21 seconds into the game. Three minutes later it would be Nicole Reimer scoring yet another shot from the point. The Avros continued to dominate the first period only giving up one shot. With a 2-0 lead heading into the second, a confident crew started to allow the Quakers back in. the second period would end 2-0 with no more added markers. The third period was probably the strongest for the squad throughout the game as they had several great scoring opportunities; only being able to capitalize on two. Goals scored in the third came from Becky Conner and Nicole Carswell. Your Winnipeg Avros out shot the Quakers 37-12 and look to continue their offensive push against the Little Ceasars tonight at 6:40.
AVROS END REGULAR SEASON WITH 0-0 TIE VS. CAPS
It was a short break for the Avros as they took the ice tonight against the Central Plains Capitals less than 24 hours after returning from their road trip in Thompson. Both the Avros and the Capitals came to play tonight and it proved in a 23-21 shot total with neither team coming out on top. The Avros had several great scoring opportunitites but could not get a handle on the puck to capitalize. The Capitals pushed back hard on a power play in the dying minutes of the second period and again even strength towards the end of the third. Justine McIntosh picked up her third shut out of the season while Nicole Reimer was named Avros player of the game for her "brick wall" play and attitude on the blue line.
Your Avros clenched third place in regular season and will face off with the Yellowhead Chiefs in a best of five series in round one of the playoffs. Game one of the series goes saturday, february 23rd at 11:50 at Keith Bodley. Come out and cheer your Vros on!
Your Avros will also be traveling to Washington, D.C. this weekend for the JWHL U17 Challenge. To follow the teams success check out the tournament website at http://www.jwhl.org/
AVROS FIND THEIR FINISH IN GAME TWO
After defeating the Norman Wild last night 4-1 the Avros were back on the ice for game two of their weekend series this morning. The Avros were determined to get a better start today and be stronger defensively as a team. Your Avros came out flying with a relentless forecheck and urgency for loose pucks. The Avros were able to contain the Wild to their end for minutes at a time only giving up twelve shots. The team would eventually go on to beat the Wild 8-1 with goals coming from Cockerill (2), Conner (2), Kucheravy, Reimer, Cromie and Sharman. Norman got on the score board late in the third when a shot from outside the house was redirected after hitting a teammate in a scrum in front of Avros goaltender Shelby Audet. Your Winnipeg Avros next game is tomorrow at 7:15 at Keith Bodley when they take on the Central Plains Capitals in their last league game of the season.
The team took in the beautiful sights of Pisew Falls before heading home from their trip North.
AVROS WIN FIRST OF TWO IN NORTHERN MANITOBA
The Winnipeg Avros traveled north today to take on the Norman Wild in their last away series of regular season play. The Wild opened scoring at the 15:30 mark of the first period when forward, Kali Cumming broke through Avros defense, walking in all alone on Justine McIntosh. "Jmac" handled the first shot with ease but it would be Cummings finding the back of the net on her own rebound. This would be the first and last goal for the Wild as the Avros would push back out shooting their opponent 60-22, eventually beating the Wild 4-1. Kelly Cockerill opened the scoring on a rebound from a point shot from Ali Van Alstyne. The goal came one shift after your Vros had just been scored on. All tied up at one, Becky Conner made a solid effort on the penalty kill to beat her opponent along the wall in the neutral zone, breaking wide and sniping top shelf glove side on Norman goaltender, Kerigan Dowhy. The first period would end 2-1 with the Avros looking to pay closer attention to the "small details" of their game. The Avros found themselves in penalty trouble in the second but after eighteen minutes of play it would be another foot race through the neutral zone that lead to Nicole Carswell's goal high glove side. This would be the only marker of the second period. Headed out for the third, new goals were set in the dressing room and the Avros managed to play a better defensive game, only giving up four shots in the third. Megan Ross would find the back of the net one last time for the Avros when a wrist shot from the top of the circles took and awkward bounce. Honorable mentions go out to Nicole Reimer who fired ten of the Avros sixty shots and to Ashleigh Watson who was in on two of the avros four goals. Game two of the series goes tomorrow at 10:30 am.
BAD BOUNCE LEADS TO 2-2 TIE WITH CAPS
Hungry for more after their 1-0 win over the Caps on saturday, your Avros took to the ice to face the Caps one more time before the weekend was over. The Avros came out a little flat not marking their first shot till the 13 minute mark of the first period. After being out shot 14-4 for most of the first, the Avros momentum started to build as they were getting more scoring opportunities late in the first. Central Plains would notch the first goal but the Avros would bounce back with a solid individual effort by Alanna Sharman to chip the puck past Caps player, beat her defender and dangle Caps goalie, Elisha Oswald. This would send both teams to their dressing rooms tied 1-1 after twenty minutes of play. The match saw both teams battling hard in all zones, fighting for their opportunities to get pucks to the net. The physical play became crucial and proved to work on both sides as shots on net in the second period were 7-7. Neither teams would go ahead and the score remained tied after two. Heading into the third, the Avros were focused on "tipping the ice" and thats exactly what they did, out shooting the caps 15-8 in the last twenty minutes. Erin Kucheravy scored the go ahead goal when she found the back of the net during the Avros 5 on 3 power play. The Avros knew they would have to work extra hard to protect the lead against a very fast, aggressive team. The pressure was coming strong when late in the third, Caps player mis handled a walk out from behind the net, hitting the skate of an Avros defenseman redirecting the puck into their own net. This would be the last marker of the game, leaving sixty minutes of hockey all tied up 2-2. Shots on net finished 30-29 in the Avros favor.
Your Avros are back in action this friday at 8:00 as they take on the Eastman Selects in St. Annes, MB.
AVROS STEAL TWO POINTS OFF CENTRAL PLAINS
Your Winnipeg Avros traveled to Portage La Priaire tonight to take on a very hard working Central Plains squad. Although being out shot 22-17, the Avros were able to steal two points. It would be Kira Bannatyne holding strong on the blue line to keep in two clearing attempts by the Capitals. Kelly Cockerill made a beautiful read off the half wall to find Becky Conner in the slot who eventually beat Caps goalie Robin Thiessen glove side. A driven Capitals team pushed back hard finding the Avros on their heels at times but could not beat goaltender Justine McIntosh. The Winnipeg Avros know they struggled handling the puck tonight and look to be better tomorrow when they see the Capitals for a second time this weekend at 4:45 at the Allard Arena in Winnipeg.
AVROS TO STRONG FOR SELECTS
Monday nights game against the Eastman Selects was the Avros third game in three days but one couldn't tell by the way they controlled the pace of the game. Things were looking tight throughout the first period until Avros captain Ali Van Alstyne put forth a solid individual effort on the rush eventually hitting Erin Kucheravy with a beautiful slot pass to beat Selects goaltender, Sydnee Kellsey. The goal came late in the first and would send the Avros to the locker room up 1-0 after twenty minutes of play. Eastman pushed back hard as the game was far from over and eventually capitalized on the power play. Although the Avros out shot the Selects 19-8 in the second period, it would be the Selects with the lone goal. All tied up at 1 heading into the third, the Avros knew they needed to be better getting to loose pucks around net minder Sydnee Kellsey. It was rookie forward, Shyan Elias that sniped the go ahead goal off a far pad rebound in front. Another late goal by Erin Kucheravy, this time off the slot pass from Alanna Sharman would be the last marker of the night stamping yet another victory for your Winnipeg Avros.
2013 LOOKS BRIGHT FOR AVROS
The Winnipeg Avros were back on the ice last night for the sixth time since Christmas break. Defeating Pembina Valley 3-1 in their last meeting on Jan. 4th, the Avros knew what they were up against. Coming up short in a 1-0 loss last night was no disappointment for the squad as the Avros out played, out battled and out shot the defending champs 44-33. A lucky break came for the hawks late in the third period when a shot from the point was redirected off the block. This loss puts the Avros at a 4-1-1 record for 2013 and an overall record of 13-4-3. The Winnipeg Avros currently sit in third place but are still 3 and 4 games behind both teams ahead of them.
Your Avros defense has made their mark only giving up 4 goals in their last six games with Shelby Audet picking up three shut outs in her last five showings. As well, honorable mention to Erin Kucheravy who slotted 6 points in six games and Alanna Sharman and Ali Van Alstyne who notched 5.The future is bright for the Winnipeg Avros Hockey Team as they enter the home stretch of regular season play.

The teams' round robin play will kick off thursday at 3:30 when they take on the Notre Dame Hounds (AAA) in front of their home crowd. The Avros will also be in action Friday at 10:30 vs. the Pacific Ravens and then again at 8:30 vs. the Southeast Tigers. AVROS OPEN TOURNAMENT WITH 4-2 VICTORY
Your Winnipeg Avros skated to a 4-2 victory over the home town Hounds AAA Team Thursday at 3:30. Assistant captain, Kira Bannatyne opened scoring at the 2 minute mark of the first period after an aggressive forecheck by forward Nicole Carswell caused a turn over low in the Hounds zone. The first period would end 1-0 with the Avros not happy about their opening period performance. The second period would see two beautiful unassisted goals by Becky Conner and Alanna Sharman, both of which went bar down on Hounds goaltender, Summer Roberts. After 40 minutes of play, your Avros were up 3-1 and still looking to build. With 31 seconds left, Hounds forward Katelyn Breitkreuz would find the back of the net and put the game within one. Alanna Sharman would answer back scoring her second of the night with one second left in the game to stamp the win at 4-2. Goaltender Justine McIntosh picked up the win for the Avros today.
AVROS TO HARD TO HANDLE
A new day for the Winnipeg Avros brought great things for the squad. After re examining yesterdays play and having a solid team meeting, your Vros were hungry for more. Coming out strong from the drop of the puck, your Winnipeg Avros were to hard to handle in their 5-1 victory over the Pacific Ravens. It would be team captain, Megan Ross who opened scoring off a beautiful half wall drive when she broke the seam and scored short side. The period would only end 1-0 but the Avros strong puck pursuit contained the Ravens to their end for minutes at a time. The second period brought three more goals by rookie centerman, Jordyn Reimer, defenceman Nicole Reimer and veteran Megan Ross, scoring her second of the night. The team wasn't able to hold the Ravens off forever and gave up a short handed goal at the 15 minute mark of the second period. Up 4-1 heading into the third, Jordyn Reimer decided the night wasn't quite over for her yet, scoring the teams fifth goal and her second of the night with under two minutes to go. Your Winnipeg Avros out shot the Pacific Ravens 40-14. Goaltender Shelby Audet picked up the Avros win this morning.
"ALL OUT, ALL GAME, ALL SEASON"
After only a few hours rest, the Winnipeg Avros took the ice for the second time friday facing a very skilled Southeast Tigers team. The game would go back and forth throughout all sixty minutes of play with the Avros looking tired at times. Down 1-0 after the first, the Avros knew things weren't going to come easy. Following their team motto "All Out, All Game, All Season" the Avros pushed through every shift with determination to claw back...and that they did. Alanna Sharman tied the game at 1 after a solid individual effort in the neutral zone followed by her beating the Tigers D and finishing with a ridiculous move on the Ravens goaltender, Victoria Campbell. Tied up 1-1 after two, the game was still anyones to win with both teams having several scoring opportunities. At the eleven minute mark of the third, teams would be faced with their first 4 on 4 situation of the night. This time it would be your Avros coming out on top with another solid effort by Alanna Sharman who broke through the NZ, driving wide on Ravens defender and back handing the puck top shelf. Now it was time for the team to dig deep and put forth whatever they had left in them. Your 'Vros showed tons of character as they battled in every shift to defend their 2-1 lead. Shots on net finished 18-18 with Justine McIntosh picking up her second win of the tournament.
Warner takes Avros in Semi Finals
After a great finish in round robin play, your Winnipeg Avros came out of their pool first overall with a 3-0-0 record. Placing first in their pool meant a cross over game with the Warner Warriors who currently stand at first place in their conference in the JWHL. The Warriors also finished their round robin play with an undefeated record. An excited and motivated Avros stepped on the ice saturday at 4:30 to face a very strong skating, puck handling team. Going down 7 shots to 0 after taking an early first period penalty, you Avros were still able to come out of the period up 1-0. This would be the only lead for the Vros throughout the game as the Warriors came out firing scoring four goals in the second and another in the third. Winnipeg's effort was not an issue on the night, it was the Warriors speed that prevailed as they dominated the play and eventutally beat your Avros 5-1. Defenceman Nicole Reimer would be the lone Avros goal scorer of the night when she scored a top shelf wrister from the blue line.
Avros lose heartbreaker to Hounds in OT
Coming off a very physical sixty minutes of play on saturday, the Winnipeg Avros hit the ice for the last time in the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament sunday at 3:30. Playing for bronze was very exciting for the team and program as a whole as this would be the best finish for a Winnipeg Minor team since the tournament has been in existance. Continually progressing as a team, your Vros brought their same work ethic from saturday to the ice sunday. Facing yet another very talented team, the Avros were determined to leave every last inch on the ice. The play went back and forth all game with both teams having several scoring opportunities. At the end of twenty minutes the game was all tied up at 1 after Ali Van Alstyne scored a floating wrist shot on Notre Dame goaltender, Pascale Daigle. The second period would start with an impressive offensive push by the Kucheravy, Carswell and Sharman line. Forcing ND to their heels the trio would create several turn overs leading to two great scoring opportunities. The Avros, only able to capitalize one more time finished the second and third period tied 2-2. Van Alstyne scored her second of the night with a hard low wrist shot from just inside the blue line. The Avros would find themselves entering over time for the first time this year. Notre Dame came out pushing hard knowing they did not want things determined in a shoot out after an impressive second place finish by the Avros in the skills competition. The OT period would yet again see chances for both teams and the Avros were driven to come out on top. At just over the three minute mark, it would be the ND Hounds forward to end the game after a walkout out of the Avros corner. The team was disappointed with the loss but the coaching staff and Avros Family were very proud of the effort left on the ice by all players. The weekend brought great strides for the team and we're all very excited to see what happens next. Congratulations on a solid effort and fourth place finish.
WATSON EARNS MFMHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Week 8 - Ending November 25th
Watson who hails from Winnipeg had 3 assists in the Avros 3 -1 victory over their city rivals Winnipeg Ice on Saturday November 24th. To date this season Watson is tied for third in team scoring for the second place Avros with 12 points in 20 games. Watson is also a major reason the Avros are one of the best defensive teams in the MFMHL only allowing 14 goals in 10 games due to her solid play in her own end and ability to move the puck. Watson a graduating midget this season is recognized as a team leader for the Avros and was selected as an Assistant Captain by her coaching staff.
AVROS PICK UP 2 POINTS AGAINST CROSS TOWN RIVAL
The Winnipeg Avros picked up two more points this weekend when they defeated their cross town rivals, the Winnipeg Ice 3-1. Becky Conner had a two goal night, including a short handed goal at the 16 minute mark of the third period. Honorable mention goes to defenceman Ashleigh Watson who picked up three assists. Most action would be in the Ice end as the Avros put forth a relentless puck pursuit, containing the ice to their end for minutes at a time. On an Avros count, your "Vros" out shot the ice 44-19.
WEEKEND RECAP - Nov 17 & 18
Avros Defeat Wildcats 4-1
The Avros started their weekend with a home game against the Westman Wildcats on saturday at the Keith Bodley Arena. The Wildcats are a very talented and hard working team and they would prove that early sending the avros into first intermission down 1-0. Your Avros pushed back in the second with an unassisted short handed goal by Alanna Sharman. The goal came after "Sharmy" dangled not one but two players putting herself on a 1 on 0 and finishing with a top shelf glove side goal. The game was very evenly matched and was all tied up at one after two periods of play. The third period would bring a hard working, determined Avros team. It was Nicole Carswells goal at the eight minute mark that would send the Avros ahead. The game would remain tight right down till the wire with the Wildcats forced to pull their goalie. The Wildcats would win the face off in our zone but it would be ``Carsy`` that jumps the puck, chips into the zone and lets her speed carry her right to the open net bringing the score to 3-1. Twenty seconds later on a great line effort, it would be Kelly Cockerill to score another open net goal stamping the Avros win at 4-1. Shots on net were 31-30 for your Avros.
SMA Ties Game With 10 Seconds Left
The Avros were back on the ice and ready to take on the St. Marys Flames Prep squad on sunday at 12:30 at the Iceplex. The first few shifts would show that the Flames came to play but that would be enough for the Avros to regroup and re-energize. After some great execution in the offensive zone it would be Erin Kucheravy to get the first marker of the game on an Avros power play at 11:22 of the first period. Heading into the second period, the Avros would not be satisfied with a one goal lead. This was shown through the Avros aggressive puck pursuit as well as a solid effort on the back end by the defense. The Avros pressed hard barely allowing the Flames out of their own zone, out shooting them 11-3 in the second period. Being up 2-0 entering the third (after a second power play goal by Alicia Van Alstyne), the Avros came out confident but knew the Flames would never quit. This showed true when Tess Bracken would score an unassisted goal after a turnover low in the defensive zone. Although the Avros out shot the Flames in the third 13-9, they fell just short of the win when Danielle Krzyszczyk scored on a breakaway with 10 seconds remaining in the game. The Flames had pulled their goalie with just under a minute left. Avros were able to get into the neutral zone but were unable to get the puck deep. With players caught out of position, it would be Krzyszczyk to end the game in a 2-2 tie. Your Avros out shot the Flames 35-21 and played the best second period the coaches have seen from the squad this season.
SHARMAN EARNS MFMHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Week 6 - Ending November 13
Sharman who hails from Winnipeg led the Avros with 2 goals and 2 assists during their 3-3 tie and 3-0 win vs. the Norman Wild and Eastman Selects in MFMHL play this past weekend. She currently leads the Avros with 17 points in 15 games overall and is quickly becoming a key to their offensive success. Sharman displays strong ability with the puck and her coaches talk about her relentless puck pursuit as well as her ability to play in all three zones. "Sharmy" is one of the hardest working players on the team and this dedication is being rewarded with positive results on the ice.
WINNIPEG AVROS HELP YOUNG PLAYERS EXPERIENCE A DREAM
Seven players; Erin Kucheravy, Alanna Sharman, Shannon Kleysen, Ashleigh Watson, Megan Ross, Kelly Cockerill and Julie Desrochers (2011-2012 alumni) volunteered their friday night to help MARSC and Hockey Winnipeg sort mass quantities of donated used equipment from around the city. The equipment was being sorted into sizes in order to outfit hundreds of young boys and girls throughout our province. MARSC and Hockey Winnipeg will then donate the equipment as part of their "Experience A Dream" Project; giving hundreds of excited youngsters the chance to step on the ice and play the game that we all love.
AUDET EARNS MFMHL GOALIE OF THE MONTH
Shelby Audet is the first MFMHL GDI Goalie of the Month after finishing October with a record of 3 wins-0 losses-1 tie. WINNING STREAK ENDS IN TOUGH LOSS
Your Winnipeg Avros took to the road for their first away game of the season yesterday. The team was in action last night in the Westman Wildcats home rink of Hartney. Westman would catch the Avros on their heels in the very first shift of the game when Ashleigh Brykaliuk walked through the face off, gained zone and went to work. Her goal came at the 18 second mark of the game. It would only take Avros forward Alanna Sharman three minutes to answer back on an incredible self effort on the penalty kill. "Sharmy" won the puck battle on the wall to walk in and shelf the puck short side on Westman goaltender Kristen Campbell. The first period would end in a 1-1 tie. Ready and energized to have a better start to the second, your Winnipeg Avros came out hard battling back and forth in front of a large home crowd. Both teams would be shut out in the second leaving the score at 1-1 entering the third period. Avros would strike first when Alanna Sharman walked in on almost the exact same angle as her first goal but tricked the goalie by sliding it under her far pad this time, a tremendous read and ability with the puck. Thirty five seconds later the ref would call a controversal deliberate off side against the Avros and send the puck back into their zone. This time it would be Karissa Kirkup finding the back of the net on Avros goaltender Shelby Audet. Frustration on the previous call set in for an Avros coaching staff and a bench minor was assessed. It would be on this Westman power play that Jaycee Magwood would score the game winning goal and clench the victory 3-2. An exhausted and disappointed group felt what it was like to be on the other end of things and will continue to play with passion to ensure this feeling doesn't happen very often.
AVROS STREAK HITS DOUBLE DIGITS
The weekend brought two of the toughest battles the Avros have seen all season. After a 2-1 win over the Westman Wildcats and a 5-3 final in a hard hitting, physical game against the Balmoral Hall Blazers, your Avros are now undefeated in their last ten games.
Saturdays game against Westman turned out to be a nail biter in the third period as the Avros got caught on their heels and gave up 17 shots. Heading into the dressing room after the second, the Avros were up 2-1 and were out shooting the Wildcats 25-12. The team found themself on the powerplay twice in the second and were able to capitalize on both opportunities. The first goal came with a determination effort to gain the offensive zone by Alanna Sharman. When the high slot shot never got through, it would be Nicole Carswells hard work low in the zone to out muscle the Wildcats defense and get the puck out front where Erin Kucheravy would eventually finish the sequence by backhanding the puck top shelf. The second goal on the night came from Alicia Van Alstyne on a cannon shot from the blue line. The Wildcats answered back a minute and a half later when the Avros defense caughed up the puck just outside their own blue line sending Wildcats forward Samantha Dyck in on a breakaway. Samantha's goal would be one of only five shots the Avros gave up in the second period and would be the last marker of the game.
Coming off a successful night as a team, the Avros were beyond motivated for their chance to take on the BH Blazers today at the Iceplex. The exhibition game was by far the most aggressive game the Avros have been involved in. The Blazers came out with a physical presence right off the hop but the Avros proved that mental and physical toughness wins games. It took a relentless puck pursuit and second efforts on all battles for the Vros to be successful today. The game saw a total of 17 penalties allowing both teams to show off their special teams. Twelve minutes into play, Alanna Sharman got the first marker of the night off a slap shot from the top of the circles. Balmoral Hall player, Ryleigh Houston replied with a powerplay goal at the 3:35 mark of the first period. It would only take another two and a half minutes before BH would score again sending the Avros into the dressing room down one after twenty minutes of play. Kelly Cockerill had the only goal of the second period, tying things up at two. The Avros came out in the third determined to finish what they started and thats exactly what they did. Three more goals were added by Erin Kucheravy (2) and Nicole Carswell which would stamp a 5-3 victory for the Winnipeg Avros today. Today the team played with heart and determination to put themselves on the map. The win today brought major strides for the team and the program as a whole.
AVROS EXTEND STREAK TO EIGHT
Your Winnipeg Avros took on the Eastman Selects at 1:00 this afternoon in front of a loud home crowd. After saturdays game was cancelled the Avros were back to work at practice last night in order to prepare for todays game. The hard work seem to pay off early in the first period as your Vros dominated the play but it would be Sarah Hnytka who would get Eastmans first shot and open scoring for the Selects on a controversal goal. Not allowing frustration to win, the Avros took the goal as motivation to bounce back. It was the Avros aggressive forecheck shift after shift that contained Eastman to their own end. Erin Kucheravy tied the game at the three minute mark of the first period when she went bar down on goaltender, Sydnee Kellsey. Heading into the dressing room at the first intermission the Avros were out shooting the Selects 13-4. The second period proved that the tables could turn at any point. After taking two back to back penalties and giving up 15 shots, the game remained tied at one after 40 minutes of play. With some minor adjustments, the Avros came out in the third hungry to compete. It would only take a minute and twenty six seconds before Becky Conner would shelf the puck glove side after a beautiful slot pass from Kelly Cockerill. The team would not settle only being up by one and their tenacious puck pursuit would finally pay off when Alanna Sharman walked behind the net and stuffed the puck in on a wrap around. It would be this final goal at the 12:44 mark of the third period that stamped yet another victory for your Winnipeg Avros. Your Vros our shot the Selects 26-1 in the third period for a game total of 44-20.
The Avros are home again next saturday at 4:45 at Keith Bodley Arena when they take on the Westman Wildcats.
AVROS IMPROVE STREAK TO SEVEN
Your Avros were back in action on Saturday, one week after tying last years National Champions, Pembina Valley. An anxious but motivated bunch would face their cross town rivals, the Winnipeg Ice. The Ice came on strong on the first shift but would not be able to shut down the individual effort by Alanna Sharman. "Sharmy" put her puck skills to work as she went around several players before sending the puck top shelf 47 seconds into the game. The score remained the same until the Avros came on strong on their first power play. It was rookie, Becky Conner that found the back of the net off a pass from Avros Co-Captain, Megan Ross. This would be the first of three for Becky on the night, marking the Avros first hat trick of the 2012-2013 season. Avros headed into the dressing room up 2-0 after twenty minutes of play. They were not their typical selves in the second period, allowing the Ice opportunities to bounce back. It was Chantal Olson of the Ice with a chance to tie it up but the quick low glove of Shelby Audet would keep the score at 2-1 after fourty minutes. The Ice would see their only goal of the night at the 15 minute mark when Michelle Anderson would ring the puck off the top inside bar on the Power Play. From there, it became a battle with the Ice shutting out the Avros in the second period. A frustrated but determined Avros Family entered the locker room to re evaluate their play. After much discussion, your Vros came out firing; out shooting their opponent 16 to 1 in the third period for a game total of 42-12. It would be the hard work of second year forward, Nicole Carswell to dig out pucks and pop a beautiful back hand goal over the glove of Michelle Kerdes. From there, the flood gates opened with Becky Conner scoring her second of the night on an Avros power play, followed by Erin Kucheravys (31 seconds later) tip off a shot from Alanna Sharman and stamping the win with Becky Conners third goal with 3 minutes to go. Honourable mentions also go out to veteran players; Megan Ross (three assists) and Ashleigh Watson (four assists).
Your Avros are in action again this sunday at 1:00 at Allard vs. The Eastman Selects. GO AVROS!

AVROS UNDEFEATED IN LAST SIX GAMES
Your Winnipeg Avros finished off the Thanksgiving weeked with a 1-1 tie today against the 2012 Esso National Champions; Pembina Valley. The Avros came off a 4-3 victory over the Thunder Bay Queens last night, squeeking out a win with no time remaining. After completely getting out shot and the Avros call up goalie, Sydney Urwin standing on her head, it was second year player Nicole Carswell that finished the game with 8.6 secs left. Today was a new day for the squad as they brought intensity, urgency and a motivation to compete. After two scoreless periods and the Avros out shooting the Hawks going into the third it would be Hawks forward Marlee Clarkson that redirects a point shot from Pembina Valleys captain on the Power Play. Seven minutes later it would be the hard work of Avros defenceman Nicki Reimer who rushes the puck end to end for a cross crease pass to Avros captain Megan Ross. This would be the second and last goal of the game ending sixty minutes of play in a tie.
Last nights win and todays tie will now advance the Avros to an overall season record of 4-2-3 leaving the team at a 3-0-3 record in their last six games.

2012 PLAYOFF RECAP:
AVROS WIN SECOND ROUND IN FOUR
After dropping game one 4-2 on home ice to the Westman Wildcats, your Winnipeg Avros rallied to win the next three consecutive games. The team travelled to Killarney for game two where they went ahead early 1-0 in the first but found themselves all tied up 2-2 at the end of the second. Katie Zacharias would put the team ahead 3-2 when she sniped her third goal of the night but the Westman Wildcats would soon bounce back bringing the game to a 3-3 dead lock. It was the determination of your Avros captain, Cass Jorgenson who would finish the game off on an unassisted goal at the 7:09 mark of the third period. Game three saw the Avros back at home in a 2-1 victory with goals from Vanessa Klimpke and Alanna Sharman. With not much turn around time, your Avros loaded the bus and headed to Hartney the following day where they would find themselves in a tough battle from start to finish. Westman came out hard, scoring first and catching your Avros on their heels. Vanessa Klimpke would be the lone scorer in the second period to tie things up at 1-1. The excitement was far from over. Keeping it to the wire, Erin Kucheravy scored on the power play at the 3:55 mark of the third. Westman would not be satisfied with this and found the back of the net just one minute later. In the end, the Avros hero would be Nicole Carswell who scored the game winner 42 seconds later to advance the team to the Provincial Championship against the Pembina Valley Hawks.
