AVROS CLOSE OUT THE GHU SHOWCASE WITH BIG 4-0 WIN OVER THE ICE

After being stranded until late tuesday night your Winnipeg Avros were right back at it this past weekend participating in the Girls Hockey United Showcase at the Bell MTS Iceplex. The Avros opened the tournament friday night with a 3-2 win against the Pilot Mound Buffaloes. Trinity Grove picked up a beautiful pass from Rachel Gottfired to get the game winner with just seconds left in regulation. Other goal scorers were Janelle Perrault who demonstrated her filthy mitts on a breakaway feed by Kylar MacLeod and Hayley Johnson who picked up the Avros other goal on a far pad rebound from Norah Collins. It was a rather slow start to the weekend as the Avros battled through some serious fatigue heading into Saturday. Game 2 would see the Avros face off against the Battleford Sharks which would come to an early but weird ending with the Avros winning 1-0. It was all Trinity Grove as she poked a puck past a Sharks blue liner to put herself on a breakaway and score a beauty 3v5 short handed goal. The Avros wouldn't be so lucky saturday evening as they took to the ice against a very hungry Eastman Selects team. It took almost 30 mins. for the Avros to get on the scoreboard first and this time it was a beauty snap shot from Captain Baker. That would be all she wrote for the Vros as Eastman would bang home three goals in the third period defeating the Avros 3-1. Right when we think we have run out of gas the girls come out on sunday and surprise us with a huge 4-0 win over the Winnipeg Ice. How to explain the goals? Textbook! It's clear the team has bought in as all four goals were executed perfectly. Madisyn Smith opened scoring on a beautiful back door power play one tee feed from Grove and Wuirch-Coombs. The Avros second goal was also scored on the power play, this time it would be Jade Giesbrecht batting home her own rebound off a slot feed from Smith. Janelle Perrault would go on the forecheck to create a loose puck for Courtenay Bayes who buries this one short side on the Ice tendy. Last but not least, a solid second, third effort by Grove to fight off a defender and feed Katrina Tobin who was all alone in the slot. The win would give the Avros and the Ice both a 3-1 overall record on the weekend meaning the Avros sit on top of back to back showcases. Congrats to all players and coaches for battling through some adversity and finding a way.

Not only did the Vros get to play some good hockey but they got to take in some of the best to play the game. Alongside the U12, U14, U17 and U19 Divisons was the NCAA D1 Showcase between Wisconsin, Harvard, MInnesota and Boston UNiversity. The Avros were fortunate enough to catch the 2nd Nationally Ranked Wisconsin Badgers take on the 9th Nationally ranked Harvard Crimson. At the conclusion of the game three Canadians including Manitobas own Kristen Campbell (joined by Sophie Shirley and Daryl Watts) came for a meet and greet with the team. The adventure wasn't quite over in Music City as the teams flight was cancelled grounding the Avros for two extra days in Nashville.

The win was the Avros third win of the week as they also picked up a massive 9-4 win on the road over Eastman last Wednesday and a closer 2-1 win over Pembina Valley on Saturday (back at home). The Avros are reaching their stride and are showing a huge offensive improvement from the start of the season. All players are contribuitng and that was evident in the Avros win on Wednesday when they had nine goals from nine different players. Jordan Mackow and Liv Svenne have also proven to be the toughest goal pairing in the league. Mackows 6-0 win was her fifth shut out win in 18 games played so far with the Avros while Liv Svenne is above the pack in MFHLU18AAA standings. The win streak has kept the Avros on top but the team must stay composed and keep preparing and working towards future opponents. With a 10-2 league record (and a game in hand) the Vros are sitting in first place with 20 points followed by Eastman with 14. Head over to Seven Oaks today (Nov. 20th) to watch the team in action as they take on the Interlake Lightning at 7:00 p.m. #oneteamonedream

AVROS ON TOP OF MFMHL

With nine new players to commence the season who would have picked the Winnipeg Avros to be in top spot at the mid-point of the 2017/18 Female Midget AAA season. Led by solid team defense, the Avros have managed to find a way to win, especially in shoot-outs. On most nights the Avros have out shot and out played their opponents but scoring on a consistent basis has been a work in progress. The Avros aggressive play on most nights has had them on the wrong side of the penalty ledger having to rely on a strong penalty killing team. The few games of the New Year have seen the team continue its strong play although finding the back of the net on a more consistent basis, with scoring coming from multiple players.  The team is currently undefeated with a 3W and 0L record in 2018. With a present overall league record of 12W – 5L- 4OTW Coach Ashley van Aggelen and assistant coach Todd Cook are pleased with the team’s performance.  One anticipates Coach Ashley will continue to shape this team for a play-off run.  The fans of the Avros look forward to what is ahead! Come out and support the Avros on their journey. GO AVROS GO!

AVROS OFF TO A GREAT START

Your Winnipeg Avros are off to a great start to their regular season. The Avros opened up in Portage La Prairie on October 2nd against the Central Plains Capitals. The squad was able to capitalize on two power play goals downing the caps by a score of 2-0 and out shooting them 24-10. Lauren Taraschuk picked up her first regular season shut out of the year. Two days later Danielle Bonot-Schmidt also picked up her first regular season shut out when the Avros skated to a tight 1-0 shoot out winner in their home opener with the Eastman Selects. Bonot-Schmidt closed the door on five Eastman shoot out attempts while Emilie Masse was clutch getting the Avros only goal. The squad then boarded the bus for Hartney where they would face the Westman Wildcats in back to back games on the weekend. The Avros would prevail with a 3-1 win on saturday. Emilie Masse would score first burying the puck just under the bar on a beautiful tic tac toe play around the net with line mates Jessi Sumaling and Taylor Coward. Rookie forward Taylor Coward would pick up her second point of the night when she scored an unassisted goal after her shot block sent her in on a breakaway also going high on the Wildcats net minder. Masse would stamp the win with her second helper of the night. Sunday was a different story and although the Avros out shot the Wildcats 25-14 the Vros fell just short with two mins remaining in the game. Final score and only loss of the regular seaon so far was 2-1. One week later the Avros faced a very physical, strong skating Yellowhead Chiefs team in another back to back series but this time on home ice. The game would see chances back and forth for both sides. Seond year blue liner Amanda Desrochers put the Avros on the board first with a shot from the point just mins into the first period. Yellowhead fired back later in the first to tie up the game 1-1. The game would remain tied until the squad rallied behind one of their own that was injured on a cross check from behind. Fired up going into the 5v3 it was a Brielle Dacquay-Neveux Emilie Masse connection that put the Avros ahead 2-1 where the game would stay. Lauren Taraschuk picked up her third win and remains undefeated in league play. Not even twenty four hours later the two teams were back at Keith Bodley to battle out round two. With a roster of just thirteen skaters the Avros found themselves down 1-0 heading into the third. After a disappointing two periods the team re grouped themselves, dug deep and found a way. The Vros would not go down fighting and notched four goals in the third period. Lead by rookie forward Jenny Kim who scored first just three and a half minutes into the period when she slid the puck under Yellowhead goalie Miranda Cook. Brielle Dacquay-Neveux would be next just twent two seconds later when she sniped a shot from the blue line. Jenny Kim would get back on the sheet with four minutes remaining when she jumped the puck off an offensive zone face off finishing with a back hand dangler. Masse would bury the fourth on an open net while Bonot-Schmidt clinched the win for the Vros. Shots on net were 16-16 heading into the third but it was all your Avros in the third as they dominated the chart 16-2 completing out playing the Chiefs in the last twenty minutes. The squad is off to Detroit on thursday for the USA-Canada Cup and look to keep their strong play rolling. Stay tuned for up to date scores and team successes as the weekend goes by.

AVROS HELP RAISE $28,001.35 FOR CANCER CARE

This past weekend the Winnipeg Avros were part of something much bigger than just a league game. For the fourth year in a row the team participated in the Female Hockey Fights Cancer Charity Event in Selkirk and in doing so played in the Dale Hughesman Memorial Cup Game. The days event has grown to all 8 MFMHL teams participating in regular season games to raise money for the cure. This year was a little different with each team wearing a different colour ribbon on their jerseys in order to represent all cancers. The Avros proudly wore grey in support of Brain Cancer. The team expresses MUCH appreciation to Dennis Park and wife Melanie Park for the thousands of hours spent to put on such an amazing day and to all the volunteers that helped set up, take down, sponsor, work 50/50, sell silent auction tickets, design jerseys, print banners, print tickets/programs, work the door, announce and to all of those that either donated a prize, bought a ticket or made a financial donation - we thank you! This year the day brought in a record amount and it was still climbing into the $30,000's for Cancer Care Manitoba. What an experience for the girls to be part of!
